The island of corfu:
        The most popular of the Ionian Islands  Corfu steals the hearts of its visitors. It lies in the mouth of the Adriatic   Sea and faces the shores of the Greek and the Albania  mainland. Corfu steals the heart of its visitors with its unique natural  beauties and historic landmarks, corfu town has a spectacular beauty in its  architecture with a great influence of the venetian style and even today, it  retains its old form to a great extent with a labyrinth of narrow streets,  cobbelstone roads, small squares and multistoried houses being its basic  characteristics. Many concerts and other cultural events are displayed in Corfu’s  well known liston square during Easter and summer. Corfu  is the only Greek city which is surrounded by fortresses.
        
        Things to see:
        The Esplanade (liston square), one of the largest and most  beautiful in Greece.  This is where official parades and religious processes take place. The  buildings of the liston square resemble the architectural lines of rue de rivoli  in Paris and host a number of  cafeterias, bars and restaurants.
        The old fortress in the esplanade linked to the square by an  iron bridge was built by the byzantine to protect the city and offers one of  the most beautiful views of the town. Most of the surviving buildings, however,  date of the period of the British rule. Today the old fortress besides hosting  cultural events and concerts accommodates the military authority and part of  the Ionian university.
        The new fortress (old port) built by the venetians in 1576  and completed by the French and the British boasts one of the most spectacular  views of the old town and the old port.
        Pontikonisi-mouse Island.  A monastery built on this tiny island.
        The achelion - in 1890 the queen of Austria  - Sissy after the loss of her only son builds this castle in Gastouri. Its  elegant structure abounded by statues, paintings and lavish gardens is now open  to the public.
